Saint Hovhannes Church in Mastara

According to the legend, the relics of Saint John the Baptist, brought by Gregory the Illuminator from Caesarea, are buried here. That is why the village is called Mastara (“mas”, “masunk” is translated from Armenian as “relics” and “tara” is translated as “I took”). According to the inscriptions in the church, it was built in the 7th century by priest Grigor. However, judging by the architecture of the church, it was built in the 5th century, and in the 7th century it was only reconstructed.
