Jrapi Caravanserai

The village of Jrapi was founded in 1970 because of the relocation of Nerkin Jrapi (Chirpli) and Verin Jrapi (Jeghaj) villages due to the construction of the Akhuryan Reservoir. Through the village of Nerkin Jrapi, one of the main routes of international transit trade of the Middle Ages passed, and the ruined building of the caravanserai is still preserved.

The caravanserai is a structure of 10-11 centuries and is of three-arched type. It was built of regular black tuff stone, and the floor is with stone tiles. Caravanserai is placed in the north-south direction. The preserved part of the caravanserai of Nerkin Jrapi is a three-nave hall with a total length of 31 m and a width of 13.65 m. Along the length, 8 thick-walled pillars were placed in two rows, which divide the hall into 3 ‘ships’, connected by arches. The caravanserai was built on the main road going from Georgia and the northern provinces of Armenia to Ani.
